Online retail giant Amazon was the leading paid search advertiser in the United States in 2016 according to new research from AdGooroo, which ranked the top 20 U.S. paid search advertisers based on U.S. Google desktop text ad clicks on the top 50,000 keywords from January through December last year.
On December 2, AdGooroo examined leadership in paid search advertising performance over the 2016 Black Friday-Cyber Monday weekend. As part of our parent company Kantar Media’s Winter Holiday Advertising Trends report, today we expand upon our previous research by examining U.S. Google desktop text ad and product listing ad click share from November 21 through December 11, 2016 on the same 2500 popular retail product keywords that we previously analyzed from Black Friday through Cyber Monday.

Since their debut in the spring of 2012, Google’s product listing ads, a.k.a. Google Shopping Campaigns, have become a vital component of paid search advertising for the retail industry. To provide insight into the role of PLAs in the paid search advertising landscape during the holiday season, we compared U.S. Google desktop PLA and Text Ad activity on the top 2500 retail keywords (based on paid search ad spend) in Q4 2015.

Last week we looked at the top advertisers heading into Black Friday weekend based on paid search activity on 2500 top retail keywords. This week we’re taking a different approach and reexamining paid search activity on our Black Friday keyword group, consisting of 161 keyword terms containing the words ‘black friday’.
With Black Friday a little more than a week away, AdGooroo examined Paid Search activity in the retail category over the past month with an eye toward anticipating who will be on top over this key holiday shopping weekend.
To gauge the top advertisers in Paid Search over the key Thanksgiving weekend shopping period, AdGooroo examined Text Ad and Product Listing Ad spend on 2,856 top retail keywords (based on ad spend) for U.S. Google Desktop/Tablet and Mobile Search from Thanksgiving, November 27, through Cyber Monday, December 1.
