Link Building Is A Vital Part Of Your Overall Marketing Strategy...
But The Wrong Types of Links Can Hurt You

Every day tens of thousands of website owners and SEOs wake up with the burning question: Is today the day I lose my job or my business because of my risky backlink portfolio?

As recent events have shown (see here and here), nobody is immune to the consequences of dubious link building practices.Yet the need for link building leads many to pursue tactics which range from the merely ineffective (article syndication, mass directory submission) to the outright dangerous (throwaway sites, comment spam, buying pagerank, and so on). The fact is, most of these techniques don’t work. Others work (for now...) but put your site at risk because they fly square in the face of what the search engines specifically say you should not be doing.

The worst of these tactics are collectively known as linkspam and the search engines are investing enormous sums into designing new ways to combat them. To be sure, thousands of sites get away with linkspam every day, but this is little more than gambling. In the words of a well-known search engine expert:

Do you really want to rely on the idea that you'll be able to stay "below the radar" or that search engines won't detect those links, or that a competitor won't notice and do a spam report about those links?” - Matt Cutts, Head of the Google Webspam team

People fall into the link building trap for one reason: a mistaken belief that the only way to compete effectively is to build more links than your competitors. This leads many well-meaning webmasters into pursuing progressively more desperate measures in a misguided effort to stay ahead of the pack. A few innocent links today often leads to outright black-hat SEO tomorrow.

This "Get links at any cost" philosophy is not just risky; it’s irresponsible and it has forced thousands of companies into a cat-and-mouse game with the search engines that they can never win.

I work on my site full time, all day and all night. I want to build an asset, something that I could sell in a few years. So of course, I have to build links. But after awhile, you run out of options. I didn’t want to spam, but I felt like I was being forced to. Black hat methods are like running uphill. It’s a constant exhausting battle to beat back the search engines. Now that I found Link Insight, I’m done playing that game.

But what if there was a better way?

What if you could instantly eliminate 95% of the garbage link opportunities out there? Instead of thinking you need 10,000 links to win, someone could show you the 50 that matter?

What if you were handed a link building strategy tailored to your website that showed you exactly which links you should pursue as well as the ones you should avoid?

With this strategic plan, you'd have the peace-of-mind of knowing that your link building efforts are not putting your business in jeopardy and will continue to drive customers to your site for years to come.

Introducing a tool to help you find and score Quality Backlinks

Link Insight is that tool. It’s on a continuous mission to find inbound links both to your site as well as up to nine of your competitors (learn more about how we crawl). At any given time, this process results in a set of tens or hundreds of thousands of potential backlinks - far too large a list for the average team to reach out to.

Fortunately, Link Insight takes it a step further: it analyzes every page and gives each backlink four grades: TrustSignal, SocialSignal, GeoSignal, or SpamSignal. These four simple signals tell you how effective or risky each potential link is before you spend precious time pursuing them. These four signals have been used by the world's best backlink builders to evaluate hundreds of thousands of links over the years and have helped to establish some of the biggest brands on the web.

The result? A small set of high-potential links which can help to build both your website’s traffic as well as its trust and authority. And in the process, you'll avoid wasting time and money with such bad ideas as link exchanges, sponsored links, forum and comment spam, and other techniques used by companies engaging in black-hat SEO.

Thanks for the great work on our launch, Eric.

Stop wasting time chasing worthless links

It's worth repeating: Link Insight is not going to give you an exhaustive list of every possible backlink on the web. This high-volume approach is ineffective, expensive, and risky.

Instead, we promote a philosophy called Quality Link Building.

Quality Link Building is not about generating a high volume of incoming links. It’s about generating the right set of links tailored specifically to your site. Links which are not intended to game the system or boost SEO rankings, but rather which are designed to expose your site to high-value customers, prospects, and influencers. Links which drive customers.

Yes, you can use it to compare the overall number of inbound links between your site and your competitors, but a far more important data point to consider is the overall composition of your inbound links.

Does your site have a high ratio of Trust, Social, and Geo links? Do you have fewer spammy backlinks than your competitors? How is your link signature changing over time as a result of your link building efforts? Link Insight uses sophisticated techniques borrowed from the field of Adversarial Information Retrieval to tell you all this and more.

We know that not everyone agrees with us about this so the choice is yours:

If you truly believe that chasing tens of thousands of sponsored, untargeted, or spammy backlinks is what it takes to beat the competition, then Link Insight is not the product for you.

But if you feel that your business would benefit more from having a few hundred genuine, high-quality inbound links from well-known industry experts, raving fans, and other sites where your customers hang out, we'll show you the best places to start looking for them.

Within moments of using the Link Insight tool, I saw incredible value. The tool identified quality links that would have otherwise taken much more digging and time to find.

Hubs and High-Value Sites

Responsible link building starts with an assessment of your site.

Do you have a new site or product that needs to just "get on the map"? Then you’ll need to start with hubs. These are sites that link out to at least a few of your competitors. Search engines and potential customers alike learn about your site and which “competitive neighborhood” you belong in by reading hub pages. Getting links from hubs lays the foundation for future efforts. Common examples of hubs are targeted directories and product comparison sites.

If your site is already established, you’ll need a different strategy, Now your goal will be to establish differences between your site and your competitors’. For this, you will need to focus on high-value links. These come in two varieties:

  • Backlinks which some of your competitors already have to themselves – these are hard to get, but if you can do so, you will gradually eliminate their competitive advantage over you.
  • Trusted links which they do not have – these are often easier to get and they help to establish a competitive advantage over everyone else.

It's important that your strategy includes pursuing both types of backlinks and Link Insight can help you get there.

AdGooroo Spam Analyzer

Do you have the time to sort through thousands of potential pages, read every word, click every link and verify that there's nothing there that violates the search engine quality guidelines?

We don't. That's why the latest version of Link Insight now includes the Spam Analyzer. This tool provides a brief but detailed explanation of the various factors on a page which a search engine may consider to be spam.

Get organized with advanced workflow features

Most link builders don’t have a workflow. And when they do, it’s usually little more than a combination of Excel spreadsheets and Yahoo! site explorer.

Link Insight will help you get organized. You can record contact information for each website as well as a history of your past outreach efforts. You can even produce summary reports of your activity and automatically notify you when it finds new links.

DIY and save money

Your average outsourced link building service start at $2500 per month and hiring a reputable firm – if you can even find one – will cost you even more (typically $5,000 and up).

Why so expensive? One word: waste.

Link builders who are solely focused on chasing search rankings are forced to pursue hundreds (or even thousands) of links to find even one that can make a difference. Their tactics result in links which range from almost worthless (such as article syndication) to those that are egregious violations of the search engine quality guidelines (such as splogs, throwaway domains, and paid links). That $2500 will typically net around 50 links, perhaps one or two of which may make a meaningful difference in traffic.

Reputable link builders, on the other hand, operate much differently. They provide services which are more akin to public relations. Done properly, this is a highly labor intensive process (which makes it expensive) but it can yield big rewards. There are a few reputable link builders around but they can be hard to find (feel free to contact us for recommendations.)

Link Insight allows you to build links as effectively as the "good guys" but at a fraction of the cost (as low as $299 per month). It eliminates low-quality, spammy backlinks from your consideration set. It identifies your industry influencers – and there may not be many of them – who can put a good work in for your company and help you reach your target customer.

Typically, this set is small enough to bring your link building efforts entirely in-house. We’ve had several clients who’ve reported large traffic gains from as little as 10 hours of link building work per month (here at AdGooroo, we’ve quadrupled our organic search traffic in the five months we’ve been using Link Insight.)

Something more important than price: Security

For many companies, organic traffic represents a significant source of their overall site activity. Yet many of these firms risk their future on a shaky foundation of chasing search engine rankings or black hat SEO techniques. They argue that they haven’t got caught yet, so they probably won’t get caught any time soon.

We know better. AdGooroo tracks virtually every company’s internet presence in the world and not a month goes by when we don’t see major properties suddenly drop off the search engines. Between January and March 2010, we recorded 131 large sites that lost 70% or more of their organic search traffic (this figure excludes thousands of smaller sites that didn't make our list.)

While it's undoubtedly true that some of these websites were among the worst offenders on the internet, the search engines are continuing to improve their ability to detect linkspam. This is not a trend you want to be on the wrong side of.

We've never really had a link building strategy before. Outsourced services are so expensive and its hard to find a reputable company. Our demographic is older so we can't justify hiring an outside company. Link Insight gave us the capability to bring this in-house, which is important because my time isn't a factor.

We are not offering Link Insight to everybody (Seriously.)

If you’ve read this far, it won’t surprise you to hear that Link Insight is only available to responsible businesses who do not engage in linkspam. We ask all clients to abide by the Google Webmaster Quality Guidelines and we regularly audit all accounts to ensure compliance.

Link Insight is not about helping you with SEO. It's about generating traffic and publicity.

It’s important to realize from the onset that Link Insight is not an SEO tool. It’s a website publicity tool. If you come in with the wrong expectation, we will have an unhappy client and neither of us wants that.

To really make this work, you’ll need high quality content that people will be interested in. If you have this type of content, Link Insight will help you find people who will link to it. Good examples of superior content includes white papers, original articles, unique reports, buying guides, and educational guides. We can show you who the important influencers in your industry are, but if you have nothing which interests them, they won’t link to it.

Here are a few more things Link Insight won’t do:

  • It won’t automatically help your site get ranked for any particular keyword. Nobody can honestly promise you this.
  • It doesn't report every SEO statistic under the sun (Pagerank, keyword density, etc). We've simplified all of this into just two primary signals (Trust and Spam) and two secondary signals (Social and Geo).
  • It won’t help you spam thousands of website owners with blanket link building emails (and this is grounds for account suspension.)
  • It won’t help sites without good content.
  • Link Insight can’t make a bad business good. If your business is solely dependent on search engine traffic, your problem lies elsewhere.

Link QualityBacklinks are scored and aggregated for each competitor. This chart allows you to compare overall backlink quality for each domain. Link Quantity ChartThe link quantity chart shows you overall backlink counts over time. Link SignaturesThe link signature chart breaks out the different backlink types for both yours and your competitors' sites. It's important to monitor and manage the ratio of Spam to Trust links. Signal ChartsForget spending time working with dozens of metrics which may or may not work. Link Insight combines dozens of quality scoring models into four simple signals. These can be charted and tracked independently for each domain. Compare link signatureshere the link signatures are shown for several sites next to one another. The size of the pie charts is representative of the total number of backlinks, while the slices indicate different categories of links. In general, larger pie charts correlate with higher rankings, but sites with higher quality links will perform better overall. High Value LinksThe URLs on the "High Value Links" list have been selected from a much larger list based on their ability to dramatically improve your sites' authority. Focus your efforts on these targets first for quick wins. Link RecoveryGiven the amount of work it takes to procure just one new link, you have to remain vigilent with your existing backlinks.
